Robot txt is simple text file that is placed in your website's root directory to tell the search engines which pages can be indexed and which to skip. If the search engine spiders can skip the pages that are not considered important (Ex. Printable versions of pages, pdf files) then your website gets a better opportunity to have the most valuable pages indexed by the search engine.
